Specifying Exterior Wood Cladding - 1 HSW LU AIA & IDCEC
Course Description:
This course will focus on why wood cladding is the building material of choice for architectural specifications. The course begins with a brief examination of the historical context of wood and go in-depth about the benefits of exterior wood cladding when compared to other building materials. The course will explore the different species of wood commonly used, including Cypress, Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Atlantic White Cedar, North American White Oak, and Ipe. You will compare and contrast the sustainability, durability, availability, and weathering characteristics of each species. Once the course is complete, architects and designers will better understand the benefits of using wood as a building material and how to specify exterior wood cladding properly.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the historical context & benefits of exterior wood cladding.
- Examine how odd compares to other building materials.
- Compare/contrast sustainability, durability, availability, and weathering characteristics of different species and grades.
