Designing Energy Efficient Buildings with Passive Techniques – 1 LU/HSW

As our energy codes get more stringent, how can we design low or zero energy buildings without creating monstrous insulated coolers? One way is to use ‘natural’ means such as passive heating and cooling techniques. These have been known for centuries but have fallen out of favor. Being at the point of maximum insulation, these passive techniques can help us attain the desired efficiency. This presentation will discuss the various passive techniques architects can use to meet the energy codes. Thermal mass and proper daylighting will be featured along with orientation. The effects of thermal bridging will be discussed and how they impact design.
